West Side Story is a musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City. Two gangs are caught in a long-lasting duel. The Sharks are a Puerto Rican gang. The Jets, the American gang, want to resist newcomers entering their territory.
In the midst of this rivalry, a Jet, Tony, falls in love with a beautiful Sharks girl, Maria. But how can their love survive?
West Side Story was a hit on stage from the beginning, but the 1961 film, which won ten Oscars, ensured it's long lasting popularity and introduced its songs to a wider audience.
When West Side Story was first performed on Broadway it shocked its audiences by putting on stage the violence that was taking place nearby. Leonard Bernstein's copy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet carries his note 'An out and out plea for racial tolerance' at the top of the first page.
Sadly, the issues that the show dealt with are as relevant today as they were when it was originally performed.
