Music by David Nield.
This amateur production was by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.
This production by Flying Ducks Youth Theatre was the group's 5th production at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.
This was first produced in 1981 by the National Youth Music Theatre in London, and was written by their Musical Director. To the group's knowledge this was the first time this show was performed in the north east of England.
The design of the set was taken from original sketches used in the London production.
Tin Pan Ali follows the story of the Arabian Nights but with a twist. Princess Scheherazade tells the one thousand and first tale to the Sultan - the story of Ali Baba. The Executioner eagerly waits for her to finish so he can chop off her head! But this is no Arabian Nights setting.
This is 1930s Chicago, the thieves are the 'Chicagorillas' whilst Ali Baba is a lowly street cleaner. Ali Baba discovers a hoard of stolen jewels in a warehouse and persuades the warehouse keeper, Sesame to let him help himself to the loot, which he takes home to his girlfriend, Morgiana. The thieves return to find Kassim, Ali Baba's brother grabbing his share.
The leader of the gang, Oscar Haroon Al Carooni is bent on vengeance and determined to retrieve his stolen jewels. He instructs his gang to find the streetsweeper.
The gangsters are themselves in two gangs, 'The Tinies' led by Prince Tiny and 'The Heavies' gang by Freddie The Fiddler. A hilarious mix up occurs with half the gang becoming street sweepers, and the other half waiters, at a party held by Ali Baba. Just as they think they have caught him...
