THE FIRST CHRISTMAS ROSE (1997)

The Christmas rose is everybody's favourite. A native of the Carpathian mountains, it was probably introduced by the Romans,
and is of great antiquity and longevity. In medieval times, it was thought to be a good cure for mania. Gerard the herbalist says
that a purgation of hellebore is good for mad and furious men!
It featured in one of the medieval nativity plays, when a country girl Madelon, accompanying the shepherds, wept because she had no
offering for the Christ Child. An angel led her outside, touched the earth, and the Christmas rose sprang up and blossomed.
